Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbanjo has said no matter how long it takes, those who steal public funds will pay for it.

He said Nigerians should know that integrity is better than living a corrupt life.

He said any act of corruption by a citizen affects the reputation of his or her country.

Osinbajo spoke on the evils of corruption in Model Secondary Schools in Maitama District of the Federal Capital Territory at the unveiling of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) Integrity and Zero Tolerance Clubs Manual.

He urged the secondary students to be part of the nation’s anti-corruption war to safeguard their future.

He said: “Those who have stolen the resources of the society will pay for it. For many who think they will get away with corruption, the long arms of the law, sometimes very slow, will catch up with them.

“Each time a public officer steals money, it makes it more difficult for you to have access to good Education, good healthcare and good roads among other infrastructure.

“Every corrupt act is a crime against society. Every time we permit a person to commit a crime and get away with it, it will catch up with us. Corruption or dishonesty has an impact on us for the future, even in the present, for others.

While urging the audience not to lose hope, the Vice President expressed confidence that Nigeria can overcome corruption as a social vice.

He added: “There is nothing peculiar about our case. Many societies had been where we are. They are not new. We can overcome the challenges if we are resolute to shun corrupt practices.

He praised EFCC chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa for championing the establishment of Integrity Clubs in secondary schools and higher institutions nationwide.

He pleaded with the young students to join the army to fight against corruption.

He said: “You (the students) represent the army that must fight corruption to safeguard your future. Those who destroy the reputation of your country are not doing you any good.

“We must develop an anti-corruption army. That army is waiting for us in our schools.” We must individually and collectively support this initiative.”
