Neymar’s playing season has come to an end as the Brazilian is expected to undergo surgery on his damaged right ankle.
French club Paris Saint-Germain confirmed on Monday that he will be operated on in the coming days at a hospital in Doha.
This will relegate him to the sidelines for three to four months before he will be allowed to join the team in training.
“Neymar Jr. has presented several episodes of instability of the right ankle in recent years,” PSG said in a statement.
“Following his last sprain on February 20, the Paris Saint-Germain medical staff recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid a major risk of recurrence.
“All the experts consulted have confirmed this necessity.”
Neymar, who sustained his latest injury in PSG’s 4-3 win against Lilla in the French league last month, will miss his side’s Champions League match at Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
PSG will be heading into the second-leg of the round of 16 tie having lost the first-leg by one goal to nil.
While it remains to unclear whether PSG will seal victory against Bayern to advance to the next round, it is an established fact that the French champions have raised their game in recent weeks as Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi have been sensational despite Neymar’s absence.
