Israeli authorities have heightened security in Jerusalem, particularly in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.
This comes in preparation for the annual “flag day” march by Palestinians, Orthodox Jews and settlers.
The event takes place amid an already tense situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Over 2,000 police officers have been deployed as flag-bearing marchers gather near the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound to participate in the parade, which commemorates the capture of East Jerusalem in 1967 and its subsequent occupation.
Israel’s annexation of occupied East Jerusalem and the Old City has not been recognized by the international community.
The flag day march, expected to draw tens of thousands has faced violence in recent years due to provocations against Palestinians, including inflammatory slogans.
Riot police are now on guard to anticipate potential unrest.
