The United Nations has stated that Nigeria has an important role to play in promoting peace and security on the continent following the recent swearing-in of President Bola Tinubu.

The statement was made by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday.

While congratulating President Tinubu on his inauguration, Guterres who fielded questions from members of the press at UN headquarters in New York also harped on Nigeria’s role in sustainable development in the region.

He also expressed eagerness to strengthen ties with the African nation.

“Nigeria is an important partner of the United Nations, has an important role to play in the promotion of sustainable development, in the promotion of peace and security in the region and beyond.

“And we look forward to deepening the ties between Nigeria and the United Nations”, he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, British Monarch King Charles III has also felicitated President Tinubu, expressing willingness to build stronger ties with the new administration.

“Dear Mr President, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to you on your inauguration as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to send you every possible good wish as you assume the many responsibilities of your office.

“As Commonwealth partners with a deep bond, I look forward to building an even stronger friendship between our countries during your Presidency”, he stated.
