Spain defeated England 1-0 in Sydney on Sunday to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in history.
La Roja won the game with a single goal from Olga Carmona that was well-deserved.
The Lionesses had a strong start and came close to scoring when Lauren Hemp’s looping attempt from 15 yards beat Catalina Coll’s outstretched hands before hitting the crossbar.
Spain quickly gained an advantage in the game and forced their dominance to hold England at bay.
Alba Redondo’s shot at goalie Mary Earps during a quick forward run gave them their first chance at scoring.
The attempt proved to be a precursor to the opener as Spain exposed the spaces left by England’s attacking full-backs and took their chance when Lucy Bronze lost the ball in the centre circle.
Bronze’s error allowed Carmona to race forward and finish with devastating precision from Mariona Caldentey’s through ball.
In response, the Lionesses threw bodies forward to draw level and spark a comeback win like they did against Spain in the Euro 2022 quarter-final, but La Roja repelled every attack launched at them.
Spain later had a golden chance to double their lead and put the game to bed after Keira Walsh handled in the box but all-time leading scorer Jennifer Hermoso failed to convert from 12 yards.
There was one last opportunity for England to draw level through substitute Lauren James in the closing stages, but Coll pulled off a fingertip save to deny the Chelsea forward.
With 13 minutes of added on time, Spain held their nerves for a historic win which sparked jubilant scenes among their supporters at full time.
