The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission, JiSIEC, has announced the postponement of the local government elections.
The decision was revealed by JiSIEC Chairman, Alhaji Auwalu Muhammad Harbo, during a stakeholders meeting held on Wednesday at the commission’s office in Dutse.
Harbo stated that the elections, initially scheduled for June 2024, were postponed to comply with the current Electoral Act of 2022, which requires a 360-day notice period for elections, compared to the previous 90 days.
The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission, JiSIEC wishes to inform all registered political parties in Jigawa and the general public that the June 2024 local government council elections have been postponed following the amendment of Jigawa State electoral law of 2012.
“This amendment aligns with the current Electoral Act of 2022, which mandates a 360-day notice period for all political parties to prepare for subsequent local government elections,” Harbo explained.
He further announced that the new date for the local government council elections across the 27 local government areas in Jigawa State will be Saturday, June 14, 2025.
Harbo also expressed his appreciation for the support and cooperation of political parties and other stakeholders with the commission.
