1. The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed his men across the country to “deal decisively” with arsonists and troublemakers as youths stage #EndBadGovernance protests against hunger and economic hardship across the Federation starting on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
2. Sadly, prices of foodstuff have again gone up in major markets across the country as Nigerians engaged in panic buying in a bid to stock their homes before the planned nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest begin today.
3. Still on the protest, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has given President Bola Tinubu an eight item demand to ameliorate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, ahead of the August 1 planned protest.
4. Less than 24 hours to the planned nationwide protests against hardship in the country slated for Thursday, August 1, the Lagos State Police Command said its operatives have foiled bomb attack in Ikeja, the seat of the State Government.
5. Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf has openly backed the nationwide hardship protest slated to start on August 1, 2024. He assured peaceful citizens of his support and vowed to personally receive demonstrators at the Government House on Thursday.
6. The Nigerian government has assured its citizens that its N40,000 per 50-kilogram bag of rice is already available across locations in the country. Information Minister explained that rice has been distributed across designated locations pending commencement of sales to Nigerians.

Former liberation fighter for the Niger Delta, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, has sent a strong message to those organizing the upcoming countrywide demonstration against hardship, telling them not to bother bringing it to the Niger Delta. He claimed that the objective of those sponsoring the demonstration conflicted with the issues of the people of the Niger Delta.
8. Clinical Japan beat Nigeria 3-1 in the final Group C women’s football event at the Paris Olympics to send the African giants home. A First-half goals from Maika Hamano, Mina Tanaka, and Hikaru Kitagawa ensured that Futoshi Ikeda’s ladies finished second in the group to book a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament at the expense of Nigeria.
9. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund said on Wednesday it had disbursed a total of N1.17bn to 20,000 students in five of the public tertiary institutions that applied for the loan. The Managing Director of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday adding that NELFUND would keep increasing the number of beneficiaries based on applications.
10. The electricity subsidy obligation of the Federal Government rose from N252.76bn to N633.30bn in the first quarter of 2024, a report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has disclosed. The NERC said the electricity subsidy skyrocketed to N211.10bn per month in the first three months of 2024, from N84.25bn in the last quarter of 2023.
