The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has warned that it would not recognize any parallel congress carried out by any political party in the country.

The commission made the revelation as a fall out to reports of some political parties that conducted parallel congresses in  states across the country.

INEC’s Director of Election and Party Monitoring (EPM), Aminu Idris while speaking in Abuja during the Nigerian Political Parties Discussion Series (NPPDS) said the Commission would only recognize congresses approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the parties.

“INEC only recognise congresses conducted by the congress committee appointed and approved by the parties.

“The INEC cannot go to the field and be looking for parallel congresses outside the ones conducted by the congress committee appointed by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the parties,’ he said.

He said it was the responsibilities of the parties to obey their constitutions and their approved guidelines.
