Several persons have been feared dead following the persistent rainfall and it is attendant flooding that has engulfed communities in Lagos state over the weekend.

The heavy downpour which began in early Friday morning continued Saturday night.

It was learned that on Friday, a 15-year-old student, Erinle Mouturayo Mary got drowned in a canal located at Mushin, while the corpse of two others was recovered dead by rescue authorities on Saturday at Orile-Agege after their vehicle got submerged in a violent flood.

Ipledge2nigeria learned that the incident happened while the victim who was a student of Ajigbeda Girls High School Surulere was returning from school

on a Friday afternoon during the heavy downpour.

According to the vendor, Iya Memuna who spoke to ipleged2nigeria, the remains of Mary were discovered in a canal after she mistakenly slipped and fell into the canal.

Iya Memuna added that “all effort to rescue the victim failed, as her corpse was recovered by some roadside mechanic several kilometers from Idi-Oro bus stop where she slipped.”

Unfortunately, this is the third incidence in the last two months. A few months ago a family man and a young lady got drowned in the canal.”

Also on Friday at Yaya Hassan Street, Egbe-Idimu Local Council Development Area, LCDA,  a commercial driver, simply identified as Ugo, 48, Alias, “Gunners” was swept away to his death by a heavy flood during the persistent rainfall in Lagos.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at about 4 pm, during the heavy downpour.

The incident threw the entire community into panic as residents and motorists wailed openly, running helter-skelter in a fruitless search effort to recover the victim.

As of press time, 7.30 pm, family members of the victim, who hails from Abakaliki, were seen in frantic effort in search of their loved one with the hope of finding him alive.

It was gathered that the victim, a commercial bus driver with registration number, MUS 760 XS, popularly called “Danfo” was looking for a big stone around to use as a wedge on the tire of his bus which broke down in the heavy rainfall when in the process of fetching one, he mistakenly fell into the wide drainage with high water current.

In a related development, a major flood swept away two moving vehicles along with their occupants at the Orile Agege area of Lagos.

Two of the occupants of the vehicles are still missing while four others have been rescued by some residents in the community.

The victims, three in each of the vehicles, were driving along Fatoki street, in Orile Agege, when the flood swept them into an uncompleted canal in the area.

Two of the occupants of the vehicles that were swept away swam their way to safety while the other two were rescued by some residents.

Many areas in Lagos are currently submerged by flood because the drainage system is blocked with improperly disposed waste.

Meanwhile,  Lagos State Government has assured residents that it would take necessary measures to tackle flooding in the state.

This is election season, and It is high time Nigerians demanded what is right from elected officials, otherwise these deaths will continue with no one held accountable. What is the Lagos state government or Local Government council doing to avoid such recurring incidents?
