The next measures addressing the situation in Sudan, including the implementation of the AU roadmap for the end of the war, were discussed during a meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council on May 31, 2023, at the organization’s headquarters in Addis Abeba.
According to a Sudanese diplomatic source, the army has ceased discussions with the opposing paramilitary force, RSF, regarding a ceasefire and access to aid.
Fighting has erupted in Sudan since April 15th between government forces and the paramilitary organization Rapid Support Forces.
Negotiations in early May resulted in a proclamation of promises to protect civilians and two short-term ceasefire agreements, both of which were repeatedly violated.
A government spokesman speaking in Saudi Arabia, where discussions are taking place, accused paramilitary groups of repeatedly violating prior ceasefires.
Despite the prolongation of a previous truce, violence resumed in Khartoum and the Darfur area on Tuesday.
