Arsenal won the 2023 FA Community Shield on penalties, defeating Manchester City 4-1.

The game ended 1-1 in normal time in Wembley after a closely contested match.

Both teams lacked cutting edge in the first period and were unable to break the deadlock, despite Arsenal having the majority of scoring chances.

Early on, Kai Havertz came close to putting Arsenal ahead, but City’s second-choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega expertly stopped his effort before John Stones denied Gabriel Martinelli’s follow-up effort.

Soon afterwards, another goalscoring opportunity fell to Havertz but Ortega once again was on hand to pull off a fine save to ensure that the scores were level going into the break.

The second-half began in an uninspiring fashion with both sides evidently lacking sharpness to take the lead.

But as soon as City brought on some players including their star player Kevin De Bruyne, they took control of the match and were in front in the 77th minute when Cole Palmer tucked home a curler.

In response, Arsenal pushed forward to find an equaliser and their luck was in at the death when Leandro Trossard fierce strike deflected in off Manuel Akanji to take the match to penalties.

In the shootout, City were 3-1 down after failed attempts from De Bruyne and Rodri before Fabio Viera stepped up to convert the winning penalty to get the Gunners campaign off to a perfect start.
