Another conference of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to discuss the problem has been arranged in Niger Republic.

The recently convened ECOWAS leaders in Abuja issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Niger junta to reinstate overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum or face consequences, including possible military intervention.

In retaliation, the junta severed ties with Nigeria and numerous other countries that supported Bazoum’s cause, promising to protect Niger’s territorial integrity and warning of impending military action.

ECOWAS had despatched a high-level delegation to mediate peace with the new leadership last week, but their officials met with the team led by former President General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd).

The military government in Nigerien had closed the country’s airspace indefinitely and had soldiers ready.

On Monday, August 7, ECOWAS Chairman President Bola Tinubu gave a notification of a meeting set for Thursday in Abuja.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government has convened another Extraordinary Summit of the Authority on the political situation in the Republic of Niger.

“The Summit will take place on Thursday, August 10, 2023, in Abuja.

“During the summit, the ECOWAS leaders will consider and discuss the political situation and recent developments in Niger”, the statement reads.
