Thibaut Courtois, the goalkeeper for Real Madrid, will need surgery after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The 31-year-old Belgian international was seen crying as he left the field of play after suffering the injury during Thursday’s Madrid training session.

The player has been identified as Thibaut Courtois, who has a damaged anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to an official statement released by Madrid.

“The player is scheduled to have surgery soon.”

This means he is likely to miss the majority of the season, leaving manager Carlo Ancelotti with Andriy Lunin as his only available goalkeeper.

Courtois, who was named the best goalkeeper in the world at last year’s Ballon d’Or awards, moved to Madrid from Chelsea in 2018, where he won the Premier League twice with the Blues.

He has made 230 appearances for Los Blancos since his arrival, winning Spain’s La Liga twice.

He also helped his side win the Champions League in 2022 after delivering a man-of-the-match performance in the final against Liverpool.

Madrid will face Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, August 12 to kick-off their 2023-24 league campaign.
