1.Opposition MPs in Ghana have warned President Nana Addo and raised concerns over ECOWAS’ intentions to initiate military action in Niger as part of attempts to restore constitutional order in the nation. The parliamentarians have demanded that Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo immediately halt all preparations for the deployment of the Ghanaian military.

2.Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, widely recognized as Bobrisky, is currently mourning the loss of his father.The unfortunate news emerged in the early hours of today, Monday, August 14, 2023.

 

3.Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appointed six new non-cabinet aides which include Special Adviser, Economic Planning & Budget, Olalekan Balogun. The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, in a statement on Monday.

4. After 13 years, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has said it plans to resume its orientation programme for new corps members in Borno State. Due to the insurgency, the corps members deployed to the state were made to observe their orientation in Katsina state.

5. Former Enugu State Governor, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is being manipulated by the United States in his approach to the Niger coup crisis, with the latter making him do their bidding due to the nature of his emergence as Nigeria’s leader. Amid calls for diplomacy on the part of ECOWAS by many, the Africa Union has held an emergency meeting as events unfold in the aftermath of the coup.

6. Nigerian Air Force MI-171 Helicopter on a casualty evacuation mission on Monday crashed near Chukuba village in Niger State. Confirming the incident in a statement, NAF spokesman, Edward Gabkwet, explained that the aircraft had departed Zungeru Primary School enroute Kaduna but crashed near Chukuba Village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

7. There are strong indications that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is set to wield the big stick on forex speculators in the country in the coming days, a development that may see a massive crash in the exchange rate of the dollar against the naira.

8.   The Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Center, DIGC, Paul Enenche has declared that Nigeria and other countries in the continent cannot afford to engage in a war right now. In a video clip shared on his official Twitter handle on Monday, the fiery man of God, who was reacting to the coup in Niger Republic, said Nigerians are already having enough crises bedeviling them.

9.  The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a secessionist group agitating for the Biafra Republic from Nigeria has said it will not disband its militant arm, Eastern Security Network (ESN). The group stated this in a press release by its spokesperson, Mr Emma Powerful, which was made available to journalists on Monday.

10.  No fewer than seven persons have been recorded to have been abducted in Bungudu town, headquarters of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State as armed bandits invaded the town. DAILY POST gathered that the terrorists arrived at the town located about 20 Kilometers away from Gusau, the State capital with heavily armed weapons and abducted seven persons including 2 males and 5 females, and also killed one person.

11.   The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.- Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja on Monday assured that the Army and other security agencies would not fail in addressing the current security challenges in the country. Lagbaja gave the assurance on Monday when he inaugurated the newly constructed Headquarters of 8 Division Nigerian Army Sokoto.

The National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and do everything possible to prevent petrol price from going up further and out of hand. Mr Adeolu Ogunbanjo, National Deputy President of NAPTAN, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the appeal was coming following an emergency meeting of the association on Monday in Lagos.

13.  Katsina Elders forum has called on ECOWAS and the AU to negotiate with the military leaders in Niger Republic in order to peacefully return the country to its democratic government. An elder statesman, and the Acting Chairman of the forum, Alhaji Aliyu Saulawa, made the call through their Secretary, Alhaji Ali Muhammad, during a press briefing on Monday in Katsina.

14. The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Monday, hosted members of the Nigerian female football team, the Super Falcons, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Super Falcons crashed out of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup, being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, having lost through penalties to the English team last Monday, August 7.

15  Law students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have called out Cyril Ndifon, the dean of the faculty of law, over alleged sexual harassment. In a viral video posted on Twitter on Monday, the female students alongside their male colleagues, were seen protesting in front of the institution’s faculty of law.
