Even though they were down to 10 men, West Ham defeated Chelsea 3-1 to claim their first Premier League victory of the new campaign.

Nayef Aguerd beat Conor Gallagher to head in James Ward-Prowse’s cross for the opening goal for the Hammers after a strong start.

After falling behind, Chelsea took control and tied the score just before the half-hour mark.

Carney Chukwuemeka used fast feet to evade Tomas Soucek and then slammed the ball past Alphonse Areola of West Ham.

As the Blues kept up the pressure on the Hammers, Raheem Sterling was hauled down by Soucek, earning the Blues a penalty.

Enzo Fernandez was on hand to convert from the spot but his strike was comfortably saved by Areola to keep the scores level going into the break.

West Ham later went ahead within eight minutes of the restart when Michail Antonio fired his effort out of Robert Sanchez’s reach.

The game then became critical for the Hammers when Aguerd was sent off for a reckless challenge on Nicolas Jackson in the 68 minute.

However, David Moyes’ men held on till the fifth minute of stoppage time when British-record signing Moises Caicedo conceded a penalty on his debut.

Lucas Paqueta stepped up to convert from 12 yards and sent Sanchez the wrong way to close out the match.
