The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the demolition of illegal market structures built on drainage in the Lagos Island area of the state.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke on Sunday during a “drainage and regeneration tour of Lagos Island,” expressed sadness over the “outright disregard for their well-being and environment” by locals.

“I am utilizing this information to provide notice to all of the illegal squatters and those who are engaging in unlawful activity there that it is an official notice once more that we will seize and clean up the entire market, starting totally with Bombata Market and Jankara Market. The governor declared that it would be the starting point.

Sanwo-Olu added, “I am utilizing this medium again to plead to our citizens that we will not accept it. I am speaking on the illegal dumping of trash that has been detected in the region. There will be zero tolerance, and starting tomorrow, the Ministry of the Environment will begin notifying all the stores that were constructed on the drainage to demolish their structures.

“I went on a site assessment of several sites in that axis that were devastated by flooding as part of our administration’s strategy for the redevelopment of Lagos Island.

“I visited Jankara, Ojo Giwa, Oroyiyin, Idumagbo and Pelewura markets. What was sadly visible during this inspection was the outright disregard for their well-being, the environment and their surroundings through the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, abuse of drainages and illegal construction of shops and market stalls by some residents.

“I have, therefore, issued a one-week quit notice to the affected people. I promised residents of the government’s plan to regenerate the entire place for the good of the residents and the general populace.”
