The officer who allegedly wrote a letter stating that the electoral umpire had withdrawn from the current Kano Governorship election petition case had been disciplined, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The letter was not authorized, according to Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner for INEC and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

He added that the commission must respond appropriately when other parties join INEC in a lawsuit. Olumekun declared

The letter was not authorized, we want to make that clear. It was later rescinded, and the officer received a censure.

“The public is therefore advised to discountenance the insinuation that the Commission has withdrawn from the case or even worse abandoned the appeal.

“We have therefore instructed our lawyers to proceed in line with extant policy of the Commission. The policy has not changed.”
