According to reports, the Federal Government will soon issue an order requiring airline companies to start compensating passengers for delayed and canceled flights that were not “caused” by natural disasters.

Festus Keyamo, the minister of aviation and aerospace development, revealed this on Monday in Abuja while speaking with airline executives.

His words: “On delayed flights, I want to speak for ordinary Nigerians who complain every day [about] delayed, cancelled flights. I know you have said all your reasons. You have blamed the government and a few things we do. But I also want to say that it is not all the time that it is government.

You’ve mentioned waiting for people to finish going through the screening device at several points. They have occasionally been via the screening devices. You cancel your flight while they are waiting in the lounge for five hours.

So as you can see, we will start putting the NCAA Act’s provisions into effect after some time. Nigerians, you know, are unaware that there is compensation for delays. If it is a divine act, you are not liable.

However, the NCAA Act stipulates that you must pay if it was your responsibility. As a result, while I have commended and supported all airline carriers, I will also assist Nigerians. You’ll compensate them. I’ll eventually put my feet on the ground. When you’re late, pay them.

Keyamo also asked airline operators to establish reliable communication channels so that passengers can receive cancellation notices.
