A case contesting the conduct of the most recent governorship election in Adamawa State will be heard by the Yola-based Governorship Election Tribunal on Saturday, October 28.

Senator Aishatu Ahmed Binani of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a prominent candidate for governor, had filed the lawsuit challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to reject her declaration as the winner of the state’s governorship rerun on April 15.

Recall that on April 16, 2023, Hudu Ari-Yunusa, a state resident electoral commissioner (REC) of INEC who is currently suspended, declared Binani the winner of the election that had taken place the day before but had not yet been completely tallied.

Reacting to the premature declaration by Hudu, INEC had immediately nullified the action, suspended Hudu, concluded the collation, and announced Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as winner of the election.

Binani had on May 5 gone to the governorship electional petition tribunal to raise objections against INEC, including its declaration of Fintiri as winner.

In its latest action on Binani’s petition, the tribunal on Tuesday issued a notice calling on the parties to the suit to appear before it on October 28.

The Notice of Hearing indicated that the petition between Aishatu Ahmed Dahiru & 1 other; and INEC & 2 others will be heard on the 28th day of October 2023 “and on such other days as the tribunal may determine”.
