With over 400 MW Power from Water, FG Seeks Alternative Energy Sources

The Federal Government has disclosed that it is desirous of partnering with the Private Sector to improve the nation’s Power Sector by looking beyond budgetary provisions for Power Sector Development and embracing Public Private Partnership (PPP) options.

The Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation,Hon. Bello Muhammad Goronyo said this at a workshop on Public Private Partnerships in Multipurpose Hydropower Projects, Supporting the Clean Energy Transition in Nigeria, organized by the world Bank  in Abuja.

The Minister reiterated that the Ministry is collaborating with the Private Sector to support the nations water potentials in Power Sector Development citing the collaboration with the Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) Project under preparation with the World Bank.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has made tremendous progress in the Brown and Green Field Hydropower Development through PPPs.

According to him, “the Ministry through PPP models has successfully concessioned some projects while still developing others through various PPP arrangements”.

He highlighted the 40MW Dadinkowa Hydropower Project in Gombe State, 30 MW Gurara Hydropower Plant in Kaduna State, 40MW Kashimbila Hydropower Plant in Taraba State as those already concessioned over the years.

Others are the 360MW Gurara Phase II Hydropower Project in Niger State and the 20 MW Farinruwa Hydropower Plant in Nasarawa State which are being developed through various PPP.

Speaking earlier at the workshop is the Executive Vice Chairman, North South Power, Dr. Olubunmi Peters. He disclosed the Experiences of the Private Sector as it relates to Power Sector development in Nigeria.
