The Imo State Police have taken Charles Ugwu, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State, into custody.

According to reports, Ugwu was detained on suspicion of taking part in the break-in, looting, and vandalism of the party office situated along Okigwe Road in Imo State’s capital city, Owerri.

The troubled chairman did not take the news lightly when it was rumored that he had been suspended by the party a few days prior.

However, Ugwu said in an interview that he was still the party’s chairman and that he had done nothing wrong to justify his suspension.

A source within the PDP informed our reporter that the chairman in question, a few days prior, allegedly entered the party’s secretariat and, with the help of his associates, took away party-owned properties.

The source mentioned, “Former PDP state chairman, Engr. Charles Ugwu has been detained at the state CID Police station in Owerri for breaking into the party office and looting it.

“Engr. Charles Ugwu was recently suspended from his position. Despite the suspension, he came to the office with a group and vandalized party property, taking away valuable items.

“This action constitutes a criminal offence, leading to his arrest by the police for invading and looting the office. The police are conducting an investigation and holding him accountable for these criminal acts.”

Additionally, a police source confirmed the arrest and revealed that Ugwu had provided a statement acknowledging his visit to the office and retrieval of important files, occurring a few days following his suspension.

The source further said that Ugwu was questioned by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Investigative Department of the SCID and eventually released him on bail to come back tomorrow for more interrogations.

The command Spokesman, Henry Okoye, when contacted, said he was yet to be briefed on the development but would revert as soon as he got tips from the news.
