51 indigent Nigerians benefit as Rotary Club offers free surgeries in Amuwo-Odofin community

Rotary Club of Lagos West in collaboration with five Rotary clubs at Amuwo-Odofin and Satellite Town has conducted free surgeries for 51 indigent Nigerians.

 

 

The project which took place at Amuwo Medical Center,(AMC )Hospital from the 8th-12th April 2024, was carried out with support from these clubs

 

Moreso, the programme was flagged off by, Rotary Club of Festac Metropolitan, Rotary Club of Satellite, Rotary Club of Greenfield Estate, Rotary Club of Lagos West, Rotary Club of Festac Town, Rotary Club of Amuwo-Odofin these clubs six club in Amuwo-Odofin and Satellite under District 9110, which covers Lagos and Ogun State.

 

 

President of the Rotary Club of Lagos West, Rotarian Omolara Akinsanya initiated the project with other Rotary Club presidents. A specialized team of doctors in various areas performed the surgeries, which were sponsored by the service organization.

“The surgery was conducted free of charge for those who cannot afford their hospital bills and have carried the ailments for years due to financial implications.

 

Akinsanya said that the clubs decided to pull resources together and embark on the project after a need assessment exercise was carried out within the community and its environs.

 

” Although the exercise started with a community medical outreach/sensitization with and free screening exercise, in March,2024.

 

57 people were scheduled initially, including children for the surgery. But the funds available could only carter for 51, persons, we hope to touch more lives.

 

Meanwhile, the President of the Rotary Club of Festac Metropolitan, Rotarian Babs Mogbogu said they discovered that a lot of indigent families in some communities cannot afford or access quality medical care for themselves due to the high cost of treatment.

 

“They need interventions such as this from service organizations like Rotary, co-operate bodies, government and well meaningful Nigerians need to support healthcare services.

 

He lamented the deplorable state of the nation’s health system and urged the government to see the need to invest more in the health care system and personnel to improve and save the lives of citizens, as they cannot afford medical expenses.

 

Past Assistant Governor of the Rotary Club of Lagos West and project services chairperson, Rotarian Kefe Adedibu stated that Rotary as a service organisation was bound to carry out service in areas, including disease prevention and treatment, maternal and child health, among others.

 

She hinted that the project handled as many patients as possible who were part of the exercise and presented their cases within the stipulated period.

 

Adedibu applauded the efforts of the participating Rotary clubs for putting up the humanitarian service project in less than six months and expressed gratitude to those who supported the project worth millions in their efforts to touch lives.

 

Also, the President of the Rotary Club of Satellite, Rotarian Adaobi Onyeka used the opportunity to sensitise women on fibroid surgery. Many women delay fibroid surgery because they are afraid and think of death. during surgery.

 

” They just want to endure the pain and discomfort. However, it is important to realize that fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus and while they can cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure, they are not life-threatening.

 

 

“Surgery to remove fibroids, such as a myomectomy or hysterectomy, can provide relief from symptoms and improve overall quality of life. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider to discuss treatment options and make an informed decision based on individual health needs and concerns.

 

Onyeka urged women not to take herbs because of the notion that herbal contortion can cure it. I understand that financial constraints have contributed to herbal options. Fibroid or any other medical condition should be treated by medical experts.

 

“Taking herbs to shrink fibroids may not always be effective and may not provide long-term relief. It is important to seek medical advice and explore all treatment options before deciding on how to manage fibroids.

 

Furthermore, the President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Greenfield Estate, Rotarian Nnanna Achiugo appeal to good-spirited Nigerians to support the cause of the Rotary Club.

 

Achiugo expressed appreciation to the club and those who supported the project for their generosity in assisting them to regain sound health.

 

He urged similar humanitarian organizations and governments to show some more sense of responsibility to their people by providing discounted and even sponsored medical treatment of indigent people. To prevent the use of herbal concoctions.

 

Additionally, Project Chairperson Rotarian Jake Anele is excited that the needy have their health restored without stress. We conducted free medical surgery after they were diagnosed with these ailments: Herniorrhaphy, Lumpectomy, Lipoma removal, and myomectomy, for many less privileged people, which include women, children and men.

 

 

Anele said they are committed to serving humanity and it will continue to manifest in the positive changes in the lives of many people.

 

“Our duty in Rotary is to see how we can impact and improve people’s lives and make life easier for the less privileged”.

 

He further urged Rotarians not to relent in their good work towards humanity and thanked the management of the AMC hospital for their support as well as members of the Club.

 

“for us in Rotary, impacting on people’s lives and serving humanity is our paramount business and the Club is ever ready to help the less privileged in the society as much as we can”.

 

A team of Medical Doctors from Saseun Hospital, Dr. Rowland Saseun and Dr Gbolahan Sodipo from IMC Hospital said that the team were trained surgeons, nurses and other medical teams in the hospital and all the surgery conducted have been successful.

 

They had 51 successful surgeries for indigent patients, which was their primary target of saving lives.

 

The duo applauded Rotary Club for their marvellous initiative of assisting the less-privileged in society. The project essence was to carry out surgery for the needy and those that have not been able to pay for their treatment for many years.“It is another way to assist poor patients.

 

However, the hospital assisted in managing the patients until they are discharged.”
